Bourges Cathedral
Bourges, France
Style
: High, b. 1195, c. 1255
Height: 65 ft

Superior in structure over Chartres, but perhaps lacking the aesthetic allure of its contemporary, Bourges Cathedral offered a different solution to the problems that Gothic architects faced. By looking at the plan, one sees the lack of transcept. This allows the side aisles to sweep continusously from one end to another without interruption. In addition, there are two side aisles running on either side of the nave (vs the normal one aisle). This allows an extra series of tripartite elevations to run coincidingly besides the nave's tripartite elevation. So many windows allows Bourges to be saturated and permeated with light from many beautiful stained glass windows, again, reflecting the aim of Gothic designers. Also, the flying buttresses here transfer and handle the weight of the structure more efficiently than Chartres, due to their dual support of the nave and the secondary side aisle.
