Amiens Cathedral
Amiens, France
Style: High, b. 1220, c. 1410
Height: 150 feet
Amiens Cathedral, in the heart of Picardy, is one of the largest and most classic examples of the Gothic High style. The coherence of its plan, the beauty of its three-tier interior elevation and the arrangement of its beautiful portal sculpture all reflect this achievement in Gothic style. Its design, loosely based off Chartres Cathedral, further refines the High Gothic style, such as the sunken porches, deep perforation of the surface of the stone in the towers (which nearly dissolves any solid mass of the exterior), and inside, elegantly displays the Gothic designer's confidence in unifying the space.
